[Someone comes on the feed looking a bit cranky, which is a tad unusual for him. He's also covered in splotches of soot, and the sweat on his brow may imply this is a battle he might not be winning.]
Could someone please explain to me how this place can be so rich in magic an technology, yet they still power their machines with something as inefficient as coal?
[He wipes his brow, smearing more soot on his face.]
If anyone has a more efficient solution, I'd be more than willing to hear it while I... [a grunt as he tries to loosen something in the machine] try to update this thing the best I can. I can't just leave it like this.
[He wasn't raised in the most technologically advanced empire back home, just to be working with some filthy rocks here. He was determined to fix this. People are welcome to come bother him if they too are on the farm. He'll be busy dismantling and rebuilding the machine.... all the while grumbling about how offensively outdated it is.]

... Pity they've no ceruleum for your trouble. Why are you playing around with that, anyroad?

Ugh, one tank of ceruleum and I could have this thing running twice as long with half the noise.
[He lifts his head and pushes his bangs out of his face, resulting in getting even more sooty.]
There was a job posting to help out, I figured with my background I could help maintain the tech, make some coin.
I wasn’t expecting such a mess, I’m not even a proper mechanic and I can improve this thing! It’s archaic!

[ She's trying to figure out what that is. ]
What is it supposed to do?
no subject
[He didn't ask. Asking would imply he'd accept "no" for an answer.]
It's something related to farming, I haven't paid much attention to the details, other than the coal keeps clogging the engine.
[Engines were fairly simple things, he'd worry about the rest of it after the heart of the machine was less of an absolute disaster.]

I see... well, whenever you're done, would you have time to help me with my garden? I may have used a little too much of my magic, and it's overflowing!
[ And, he might notice... she's actually surrounded by flowers and some vine-fruits! ]

She's going to be ready
He’s going to get a Talking To and he brought it in himself

Intentional anachronism. It's even more noticeable in their choice of weaponry.

[And there's a loud clang as he gives the machine a good whack, which only serves to release a small cloud of dust which forces Alfonse to briefly retreat from his work.]
no subject
...You wouldn't happen to be working on Lord Li Min's lands, would you?
no subject
[Well that was enough to get him to take his attention from the machine briefly... not that he could do much with it for the moment anyway until the dust settled.]
Is there... something I should know about if it is?
no subject
Lord Li Min has been keen to improve the farming technology here. He's accustomed to something a bit more advanced.
However, as you may have noticed, a lack of available fuel sources has posed something of a problem. The society here values nature to such an extent that even buildings are built around trees, and wide-scale fuel extraction operations tend to be, shall we say, damaging to the environment.
[That said, he picks up the small cup balanced on his leg, and drinks.]

[ They sure af don't use that in Camelot, anyway. But the township operate on whatever the nobles running them want to use. ]
We don't even have coal in my world. What's wrong with it?
no subject
Aside from being incredibly inefficient compared to sources such as magic or ceruleum, it's filthy. Look at this, it's ruining the very machine it's supposed to be powering!
no subject
[ She doesn't know anything about coal, for sure. Dust, her world's energy source, is extremely volatile so if something were covered like that, it'd just be waiting for an explosion. Just the thought makes her a little nervous for him. ]
no subject
Yes, that's what I'm doing. The problem is that within a day or two it will have to be disassembled again to be cleaned. It's a poor use of manpower, and that much exposure to the coal dust isn't good for anyone.
no subject
You should probably talk with the lord there. Where did that stuff come from, anyway?
[There's a shrug with Fran's words, for all that neither is it something that is much used in Ivalice any more.]
Or what they have.

[agriculture was obviously important to any nation, and while he wasn't surprise a nation may be taking shortcuts, machines of this counterintuitive design were something else entirely.]

[Without asking the people who have requested aid in the first place, she cannot say for certain one way or the other.]
no subject
[That was valuable time they weren’t running and turning profit, plus the cost of manpower to do such. He couldn’t imagine it was a cost effective arrangement.]

[The question is genuine - she knows little and less about the situation as it is
[ video; ]
[Hence, the constant breakdowns, alas.] If you have any suggestions for improvements, I would be glad to hear it.
[He sounds sincere about it too. He really would like to know more. He could draw out the blueprints from memory but he isn't an engineer by any means.]
no subject
[He was not an engineer technically but he had a closer relationship with battlemech than he ever wanted. That and basic training gave him a fair advantage in that regard.
It was information worth sharing however, even without ceruleum as a power source, he knew alternatives. A good core could go a long way.]
As for your fuel dilemma, I would say your first problem is trying to find something to "burn". Finding an appropriate fuel source, arranging proper extraction, and trying to refine it for use would require a lot of resources. Something more akin to a battery however would only require finding something that could hold a charge. I've seen magic users throwing around lightning, it's not ideal having people charge such things, but it would be a far more efficient and clean solution.
no subject
[And he does! The blue prints uses some terms that probably can't be translated well because they're specific to Great Liang, like the fuel that is noted as something called ziliujin. Beyond that though, it's not hard to understand because the drawings and the notes written on them are very detailed.]
I had considered batteries though I didn't know enough about them...and I didn't have a lot of time to make changes. The disaster that had struck both Lestari and Celliwig had led to an influx of mouths to feed. We managed to make it through, but I decided to prioritize getting these machines ready for the planting season, imperfect though they were.
[Because while they were breaking down a lot they also made things go a little faster.]
I had hoped to find a method that could avoid relying too much on finding people with a specific sort of magic...but it's true that electricity could be more reliably sourced.
[The dilemma...this was the sort of problem more suited to Ge Chen or Shen Yi's skill sets and interests...]

[That made far more sense. He looked over the blueprints. Solid design, but suffered from the same roadblock as some of this ideas. A foreign power source... and perhaps a few other things. He understood the base of it though.
He goes to try and draw in some modifications, only to find the device sort of... draws up what he was thinking. Unaware of his second magic type, he chocked it up as some quirk of the device. He wasn't going to complain, and simply sent the revised blueprints back. In one, it would show the entirety of his idea for the fuel overhaul, where power would be cycled back to the "core". The other, more simplified and less exact, would show a fraction of that. With no core to store the power, the recycled power would be put to use immediately and thus inexactly, which was not ideal, but should ease on fuel intake.]
Here, what do you think of this? I should be able to utilize the machines own generated heat and friction to help offset the need for fuel to start off. If we can find a battery to serve as a core, then I could potentially make the machines self-sufficient. The cores would only need to be replaced when they become unstable and can no longer properly hold a charge.
no subject
[A lot of the mechanism's work...it's just figuring out how to power them without ziliujin.
When he gets a revised blueprint he looks over it carefully...but also is a little surprised at how quickly it comes. How did they change the image so quickly and also get it ready for sending? He would have expected those two steps alone would have taken a little longer.
He supposed that wasn't important, in the end.]
The idea seems workable. To be able to reduce the energy it consumes by reusing its own heat is a fascinating idea. [He tucks it away in his mind as something that could possibly be applied back in Great Liang.] Though I'd have to go see if batteries of this size can be bought here. [A lot of this place runs on magic, after all.] ...or see if there's an alchemist capable of making something like it.
